Interested in walking in Greece away from the summer crowds? Christmas and Easter can be great times to explore the country on foot.

Walking in Greece in Easter and Christmas

If you are interested in walking in Greece, summer would seem to be the obvious time to go. Of course, this is also the time when Greece and the Greek Islands are at their most crowded, with thousands of visitors flocking to the hotels, beaches and mountains. The weather may be at its very best but, for some, the number of tourists is just too much to fully relax and enjoy themselves.

If you want to experience some quality time spent walking in Greece but want to dodge the summer crowds, an off season trip can be very rewarding, especially if you time your trip with one of the major festivals that are celebrated in the country, such as during Christmas or Easter.

There are plenty of good places to go walking in Greece during the spring and winter, but Samos and Crete are two particularly good choices. Here are some of the reasons to visit these two islands in the off season...

Christmas

Christmas can be a very special time to go walking in Greece. You may not be able to enjoy the blazing sunshine of the summer and autumn, but many of the islands have a very reasonable winter climate, and the cool, crisp winter air allows you to see the islands in an entirely new way. Best of all, of course, there are hardly any other visitors around! If you want to get away from it all, spending Christmas in Greece can be a great option for a holiday.

Samos is one of the most beautiful of the Greek Islands, and exploring the forests and the mountains on foot, then returning back to the charming Samos Town for a hearty supper is a real pleasure. Crete is another excellent option its southerly location means that it enjoys a milder winter than the rest of the Greek Islands, and its size makes it less vulnerable to the strong winds that can affect the islands in winter.

Easter

In Greek Orthodox Christianity, Easter is the biggest celebration of the year, and wherever you are in the country, you will be treated to a delightful experience. The weather is usually very fine, and the famous spring flowers of the Greek Islands ensure that they are bursting with colour during springtime. On Easter weekend itself, the churches will be packed out, and on Easter Sunday it seems like almost every house in Greece is roasting a lamb (the traditional way of celebrating the day).

Once again, Crete is a great choice for springtime walking in Greece. The flowers are particularly beautiful on this island, and the huge number of routes on this large island means that you ll never run out of places to explore. Out on Samos, the island s outstanding natural beauty is at its very best during the spring, and there are plenty of local festivities to enjoy in the traditional villages that are dotted throughout the hills of the island.

So, for a holiday with a twist, head out to the Greek Islands for Easter or Christmas you won t be disappointed!
